"Tell me about a time you handled a major crisis"

This question catches candidates off guard because it asks you to volunteer a difficult moment in front of someone who might hire you. The trap: you either downplay it ("everything worked out fine") or you sound chaotic and uncontrolled. What really matters is showing that you keep a clear head under pressure and grow from hard situations.

What the recruiter is really after

They want to see your instinct when things go wrong: do you freeze, panic or structure? They are assessing how quickly you diagnose a problem, how you communicate under urgency, and whether you own the outcome — perfect or not. A well-handled crisis with an imperfect result beats an ignored one every time.

How to answer

  • Situation (S): set the scene in two sentences — the context, the stakes, why it was urgent. Pick a professional or academic example if you can; a significant personal one works if your work history is limited.
  • Action (A): detail YOUR decisions, not the team's. What did you diagnose? What priority did you choose? Who did you pull in and why?
  • Result (R): quantify the impact where possible (deadline met, losses avoided, team stabilised) and mention what you learned.

Sample answer

"During my logistics internship, our main carrier cancelled 48 hours before a critical delivery for a client worth 30% of our monthly revenue. I immediately mapped our backup carriers, negotiated an emergency contract with two of them in under four hours, and kept the client updated in real time. The delivery arrived just six hours late — which the client accepted — and we avoided an €8,000 penalty. I then wrote a business-continuity plan so this scenario would never catch us off guard again."

The mistake to avoid

Don't tell a story where you were a bystander rather than the decision-maker. "My team handled it…" does not answer the question. The recruiter wants to hear your role, your decisions, your ownership. Also avoid vague examples ("I dealt with some stress once") — without concrete details, the answer simply doesn't land.

Practise

The best way to avoid stumbling on the day is to rehearse out loud against a simulated recruiter. Start a mock interview with Take a mock interview: the AI plays your interviewer, you deliver your crisis example in real time, and you receive a personalised coaching report afterwards that highlights your strengths and pinpoints exactly what to sharpen.
