"What is your biggest weakness?"
This is one of the most dreaded interview questions — and one of the most poorly answered. Saying "I'm a perfectionist" or "I work too hard" is now a red flag for recruiters: it signals either a lack of honesty or a lack of self-awareness. A strong answer names a genuine flaw, shows you are aware of it, and proves you are actively working on it.
What the recruiter is really after
They are testing your professional maturity and your ability to self-assess. A candidate who sees no flaws in themselves comes across as unreliable or closed to feedback. Conversely, someone who honestly names a weakness and describes their progress inspires trust — which is exactly what managers are looking for.
How to answer
- Pick a genuine weakness that is not disqualifying for the specific role. If you are applying for a communications job, do not choose public speaking.
- Show awareness of the problem: when did you identify it? What made you realise it was holding you back?
- Describe the concrete steps you have taken to improve — training, reading, regular feedback, a tool, a mentor. And say where you stand today.
Sample answer
"For a long time I struggled to delegate. I held on to tasks I should have handed off because I wanted to make sure they were done exactly the way I envisioned. That created bottlenecks and frustrated my colleagues. I worked on this by switching from constant micro-validations to weekly check-ins, and by accepting that 'done at 80% of my standard' is usually better than 'perfect but late'. My team now delivers much more autonomously, which frees up my energy for the strategic work."
The mistake to avoid
There are two symmetrical traps: naming a fake flaw disguised as a strength (perfectionism, overcommitment), and at the other extreme naming a weakness so serious it disqualifies you outright. Stay honest and specific — and always frame your answer around growth, not confession.
Practise
This answer requires both honesty and tact, a combination that is hard to calibrate without rehearsal. Take a mock interview lets you test your wording with an AI recruiter and receive a coaching report that evaluates your authenticity and professional composure.
