"What is your greatest achievement?"

This question sounds straightforward, but it trips up a surprising number of candidates. Pick the wrong example — too vague, too modest, or too far in the past — and you risk looking like you lack self-awareness. The recruiter wants to understand how you define success and what you are genuinely capable of delivering.

What the recruiter is really after

They are not hunting for the most dramatic story of your life. They want evidence that you can own a result, push through obstacles, and — ideally — bring others along with you. A recent, quantified professional achievement will always outweigh an academic award from a decade ago.

How to answer

  • Choose a professional example where you played a central, individual role — not just one where your team happened to succeed.
  • Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep the context brief; be precise about your specific actions.
  • Quantify the outcome: revenue generated, time saved, rate improved. Numbers stick in a recruiter's memory.

Sample answer

"In my previous role as project manager, our on-time delivery rate was sitting at 65%. I proposed and rolled out a shared weekly dashboard connecting the product and engineering teams. Within six months, late deliveries dropped to 8% and internal client satisfaction jumped 22 points. I'm most proud of this because I had to convince sceptical stakeholders before I had any results to show them — which meant selling the idea on logic alone."

The mistake to avoid

Do not say «we» throughout your answer without ever clarifying what you personally did. The recruiter needs to understand your individual contribution. Equally, if you have more than two years of professional experience, leave academic achievements on the shelf.

Practise

The best way to sharpen your answer is to say it out loud in front of a real interviewer. Take a mock interview puts you in a live AI-powered mock interview, and you get a personalised coaching report pinpointing exactly what lands — and what needs work.
