Why did you leave your last job: the answer that puts recruiters at ease

This is a pure professionalism test. Whether you were laid off, quit, or negotiated an exit, the recruiter wants to see how you talk about your past. The trap is that the question makes you want to over-explain. Say too much and you seem defensive. Say too little and you seem like you have something to hide.

What the recruiter is really after

They want to confirm you are not running from a problem and that your departure was not for cause. Above all, they want to hear that you are oriented toward the future rather than anchored to the past. An answer framed around what you want to build will always land better than one focused on what you are escaping.

How to answer

  • Be honest, not exhaustive: a short, clear explanation is enough. You do not owe anyone the full story.
  • Frame it around growth: even if the reality was a difficult atmosphere, find the forward-looking angle — you are seeking more responsibility, better alignment with your values, a more challenging environment.
  • Connect it to this role: close by showing that this position addresses exactly what you were looking for. It turns your departure into a clear intention rather than a complaint.

Sample answer

'I spent three years in that role and learned a great deal. At a certain point I felt I had reached the ceiling of what I could accomplish there — growth opportunities were limited and I was ready to take on more ownership on higher-impact work. That is precisely what drew me to this position.'

The mistake to avoid

Never give in to the urge to vent, even if your former manager was genuinely difficult. In an interview, criticising a past employer immediately triggers one thought in the recruiter's mind: will this person talk about us the same way in two years? Stay factual, brief, and forward-looking.
