7 mistakes to avoid in an interview
Most failed interviews fail not from a lack of skills, but from avoidable mistakes. Here are the seven most common ones.
1. Not knowing the company
"Why us?" with no specific answer is a dealbreaker. Read the site, recent news, your interviewer's profile.
2. Reciting your CV
The recruiter has already read it. Tell stories instead, with context, action and a quantified result (STAR method).
3. Answering without structure
A rambling answer loses the recruiter. Take two seconds to frame before you answer.
4. Staying vague on results
"I improved sales" is worthless without a number. "+22% in six months" changes everything.
5. Bad-mouthing your former employer
Even if justified, it makes you look negative. Stay factual and forward-looking.
6. Asking no questions
At the end, "no, it's all clear" is a missed opportunity. Prepare 2-3 questions about the role, the team, the challenges.
7. Not practising out loud
The most underrated mistake. Your answers always sound better in your head. Take a mock interview against an AI recruiter on the role you're targeting, and get a detailed coaching report before the real interview.
