What do you know about our company? Do not get caught empty-handed

This question sounds straightforward, which is exactly why it catches so many candidates off guard. Most people glance at the company's homepage the night before and arrive with a sentence about the industry and the headcount. A recruiter who hears 'you are a leading player in your sector' knows instantly that you did the bare minimum — and wonders whether that is the effort they can expect from you on the job.

What the recruiter is really after

Beyond a basic knowledge check, the recruiter wants evidence that you chose this company deliberately. They are looking for someone who can link the organisation's mission, values, or recent initiatives to their own skills and ambitions. A candidate who references a specific product launch, a recent acquisition, or a stated company value demonstrates serious preparation — and signals genuine enthusiasm.

How to answer

  • Prepare three layers: the core business (what they do, for whom, how), one recent notable fact (product launch, funding round, market expansion, sustainability initiative), and an explicit link to your own profile.
  • Be specific: cite a recent article, a value prominently featured on their site, or a post shared by a team member on LinkedIn. Specificity proves effort.
  • End with a question: it turns a one-way quiz into a real conversation and signals curiosity and initiative.

Sample answer

'I know you specialise in B2B SaaS for the logistics sector, and that you announced an expansion into Southern Europe a few months ago. I also came across your blog post on a customer-first approach to product development — that genuinely resonates with how I have worked over the past few years. Is that philosophy driven across the whole product team, or does it tend to come from specific roles?'

The mistake to avoid

Do not simply summarise the About page. The recruiter knows their own company far better than you — repeating what they already know impresses no one. Equally dangerous: confusing the company with a competitor, or citing outdated information such as a funding round from five years ago. Freshness and specificity are what set a strong answer apart.

Practise

Saying this kind of answer out loud is what makes it stick. On Take a mock interview, you can run a full mock interview with an AI recruiter and receive a coaching report that specifically analyses how well you demonstrate company knowledge and genuine preparation.
