Ace a financial analyst interview
A financial analyst turns numbers into investment or management recommendations. The recruiter tests your technique AND your judgment. Here's how to prepare.
What to expect
- Technical questions (valuation, DCF, ratios, financial statements).
- "How do you analyse a company's health?"
- "Would you recommend investing in X? Why?"
- Sometimes a modelling or calculation test.
The golden rule: from number to a clear thesis
Don't drown the recruiter in ratios. Build a thesis: "the company is solid because of X, the main risk is Y, I recommend Z." The ability to conclude is what separates an analyst from a spreadsheet.
Master your fundamentals
Income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, the main valuation methods: know how to use and connect them. A mistake on the basics is disqualifying.
Show your critical thinking
A good analyst challenges assumptions and spots risks others miss. Give an example where your analysis qualified a consensus.
Practise on the exact job offer
