Ace an accountant interview
For an accounting role, the recruiter is looking for one thing above all: reliability. A single mistake can be costly. Your job in the interview: prove your accuracy and your command of process. Here's how.
The questions you'll almost certainly get
- "Describe your role in a monthly or year-end close."
- "How do you guarantee your entries are error-free?"
- "Which accounting software do you know?"
- "How do you handle a workload spike with tight deadlines?"
The golden rule: show your control methods
Don't just say "I'm rigorous." Describe your concrete safeguards: reconciliations, double-checks, matching, a closing checklist. The recruiter wants to hear a process, not an adjective.
Be specific about your tools and scope
Name your software (ERP, advanced spreadsheets, payroll or invoicing tools) and state your exact scope: accounts payable, receivable, treasury, filings. This lets the recruiter place you instantly.
Own a past mistake… and its fix
Nobody is infallible. Telling the story of an error you caught and corrected, with the control you added afterward, makes you more credible than "I never make mistakes."
Practise on the exact job offer
Every role has its specifics (firm, in-house, general or cost accounting…). Take a mock interview for the role you're targeting: the AI recruiter will ask the right questions and you'll get a detailed coaching report.
