Ace a financial controller interview

A financial controller isn't just a spreadsheet producer: they're a business partner who informs decisions. The recruiter tests your rigour AND your ability to influence. Here's how to prepare.

The questions you'll almost certainly get

  • "How do you build and track a budget?"
  • "How do you analyse a variance between forecast and actuals?"
  • "Has one of your analyses ever changed a decision?"
  • "How do you work with operational teams?"

The golden rule: from variance to recommendation

Don't stop at the finding ("margin dropped 3 points"). Go to the cause and the recommendation: "…due to product mix, I recommended X, which restored the margin." A controller's value is decision support.

Show your business-partner side

The best controllers get out on the floor and talk to operations. Give an example where you translated a number to move a non-finance team.

Be specific on your tools

ERP, advanced spreadsheets, BI tools: name your stack and the scope you owned (revenue, costs, capex, forecasts).

Practise on the exact job offer

Every context differs (manufacturing, services, retail…). Take a mock interview for the role you're targeting: the AI recruiter will ask the right questions and you'll get a detailed coaching report.
