Ace a UX/UI designer interview
In a UX/UI interview, your portfolio speaks for you — but the recruiter mainly assesses your thinking process, not just pretty mockups. Here's how to prepare.
What to expect
- A detailed walkthrough of one or two portfolio projects.
- "How did you know your design worked?"
- "Describe a case where user research contradicted your intuition."
- "How do you work with developers and product?"
The golden rule: tell the problem, not the pixel
For each project, lay out: which user problem, what research, which iterations, what measured result (conversion, satisfaction, task success). A designer who only talks aesthetics worries recruiters; one who talks impact reassures them.
Own your failed iterations
Showing a mediocre first version and its improvement proves you test and listen to feedback. That beats a "perfect" portfolio.
Show your collaboration
Design doesn't live in a silo. Explain how you discuss feasibility with devs and trade-offs with product. Collaborative maturity is highly sought after.
Practise on the exact job offer
Every role has its focus (UX research, UI, design systems, product…). Take a mock interview for the role you're targeting: the AI recruiter will ask the right questions and you'll get a detailed coaching report.
