Ace a software developer interview

A developer interview is rarely won on raw technical skill alone. The interviewer wants to know how you reason, how you communicate under pressure and how you work on a team. Here's how to prepare.

The questions you'll almost certainly get

• "Walk me through a technical project you're proud of and your exact role."
• "How do you debug a problem you don't understand?"
• "Tell me about a technical disagreement with a teammate."
• "Why did you pick that technology over another?"

The golden rule: think out loud

In a coding test or system design round, the fatal mistake is coding in silence. Narrate your reasoning: state your assumptions, list edge cases, call out the time complexity. An interviewer prefers clear reasoning with a bug over flawless code with no explanation.

Don't oversell — show your limits

Saying "I don't know X, but here's how I'd learn it" is a strength, not a confession. Senior engineers hire people who can admit what they don't know.

Prepare your questions for them

Ask how code review, deployment, on-call and tech debt work. These questions show you think like an engineer, not just a coder.

Practise on the exact job offer
