Ace an engineer interview

Whatever the field (mechanical, civil, electronics, process…), an engineering interview tests the same thing: your ability to solve complex problems methodically and explain them clearly. Here's how to prepare.

The questions you'll almost certainly get

• "Describe a hard technical problem and how you solved it."
• "How do you validate that a solution is reliable before deploying it?"
• "Tell me about a project run with other functions (procurement, production, quality)."
• "How do you trade off cost, schedule and performance?"

The golden rule: structured, quantified reasoning

Lay out your approach: problem, assumptions, calculations/tests, validation, result. And quantify it: "cut consumption by 15%", "20% gain on cycle time." An engineer demonstrates, they don't assert.

Simplify without dumbing down

You'll also be judged on explaining a technical concept to a non-specialist (a client, a manager). Practise making it simple without making it wrong.

Show the collective dimension

An engineering project is rarely a solo act. Highlight coordination with other departments and how you manage real constraints (budget, standards, safety).
