Ace a legal counsel interview
In-house legal counsel isn't there to say "no": they protect the company while letting the business move forward. The recruiter tests your legal rigour AND your pragmatism. Here's how to prepare.
The questions you'll almost certainly get
- "How do you assess and prioritise a legal risk?"
- "How do you explain a legal constraint to a busy operational lead?"
- "Tell me about a tough contract negotiation."
- "How do you stay current in your field?"
The golden rule: actionable advice, not a law lecture
A good lawyer doesn't recite the rule: they say "here's the risk, here are the options, here's what I recommend." Show you translate law into business decisions.
Show your pragmatism
Give an example where you found a solution that protects without blocking the project. That's exactly what separates a "partner" lawyer from a "blocker."
Mind precision and confidentiality
Precision in wording and strict confidentiality are prerequisites: a clear answer on these reassures the recruiter immediately.
Practise on the exact job offer
Every role has its specialty (contracts, employment, IP, compliance…). Take a mock interview for the role you're targeting: the AI recruiter will ask the right questions and you'll get a detailed coaching report.
