Ace a product owner interview

The product owner is the guardian of value delivered by the agile team. The recruiter tests your ability to prioritise, write clear needs and make trade-offs. Here's how to prepare.

The questions you'll almost certainly get

  • "How do you prioritise your backlog?"
  • "What makes a good user story for you?"
  • "How do you say no to a stakeholder?"
  • "How do you work with the dev team day to day?"

The golden rule: value first, method second

Show you prioritise by value (impact/effort, product goals), not by who shouts loudest. Cite a framework (RICE, MoSCoW…) but above all a real example of an owned trade-off.

Prove your clarity

A confused PO makes a confused team. Show how you turn a fuzzy need into a clear story with testable acceptance criteria. Clarity is your value-add.

Distinguish PO from project manager

Be able to explain the difference: the PO owns the what/why and value, not a task schedule. This distinction shows your agile maturity.

Practise on the exact job offer

Every product has its context (B2B, B2C, platform…). Take a mock interview for the role you're targeting: the AI recruiter will put you in real scenarios and you'll get a detailed coaching report.
